Hobbies are mostly pasttimes and for fun. You don't really have hobbies to earn income or provide for your family, right?
What if you have the opportunity to earn millions because of your hobby? That would be the dream!
That dream became a reality for Derek McLennan. Derek is a metal detectorist as a hobby. And recently, he unearthed the "richest collection" of rare Viking artifacts ever uncovered in the United Kingdom!
He got a 10th century hoard full of silver bracelets, brooches, rings, and an enamelled Christian cross and a bird shaped gold pin back in 2014. He got these awesome finds in a Dumfries and Galloway field.
Derek promptly passed it on to experts from Qeen's and Lord Treasurer's Remembrance. They ruled that the 100 itemed treasure should be displayed in the National Museums Scotland if they pay £1.98 million to Derek. That's the total market value of the finds! A treasure, indeed!
Derek was lucky because the rules on Scotland is different from all of UK which states that the finder receives full payment. Whereas in UK, the payment is divided between finder and landowner.
Meanwhile, David Harvie from QLTR, said that the Galloway hoard has an internationally significant importance especially to Scotland.
He said:
“I am pleased to announce that I am minded to accept the recommendation of the Scottish Archaeological Finds Allocation Panel [Safap] that these wonderful items be allocated to National Museums Scotland, subject to it meeting the ex gratia award which would then be payable to the finder.”
Moreover, the director of NMS, Dr. Gordon Rintoul commented:
“The Galloway hoard is of outstanding international significance and we are absolutely delighted that QLTR has decided to allocate it to NMS.
“We now have six months to raise £1.98m to acquire this unique treasure for the nation and ensure it can be enjoyed by future generations both at home and abroad.”
Most of the hoard is silver jewelry but also contains textiles. It is believed that the finds were from the Byzantine era.
