When the clock strikes 12 noon, swimmers scurry out of this 'Enchanted River' in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. No, it's not because of the heat.

Loud speakers would make the Hinatuan Hymn echo all around the river when it's already 12, signalling that not a single person should stay in the waters. Like a well-rehearsed salvo, fish would also start to assemble near the riverbank.

Shortly, the river's caretaker would throw rice and octopus meat to the water, which the fish would gobble up like it's their last meal on Earth.

These ancient traditions are observed carefully and faithfully, as it is thought that fairies and pixies would frequent the area, to keep the river safe and preserved.

The mystical feeling surrounding this 'Enchanted River' is nothing sort of magical, as is its bluish waters that have remained beautiful even after countless disasters.

Locals believe that enchanted beings have actually cast a protection spell on these waters.

The left side of the river is not a place to play around, as a chasm believed to be as deep as 80 feet stands there, to be explored only by the bravest.

Most divers, especially foreigners, have tried to reach the bottom of this chasm in the river, all to no avail. Natives are much more careful in attempting so, for they are fearful of disturbing the peace of mermaids believed to be residing in the bottom of the river.

If you are thinking of visiting this Enchanted River, take note that this is not a loud vacation spot. Most tourists who have enjoyed way too much and made too much noise ended up reporting weird itches, bruises, and even boils on their skin afterwards.

However, if you simply want to visit to behold the beauty of this nature, then you need not worry. Locals would tell you to just be respectful of your surroundings, and the fairies would surely be glad to have you over.
